Foster City, CA
Located 25 miles south of San Francisco, Foster City is a planned community developed upon what was once a San Francisco Bay salt marsh tideland called Brewer’s Island. Since it was at mean sea level, dikes and levees were built and strengthened until the elevation was sufficient to provide drainage. Additional fill was brought in to strengthen the soft mud to support construction.
In 1958, T. Jack Foster, a real estate magnate, took a $200,000 option to buy Brewer’s Island and began developing a “new city” which was incorporated in 1971 as Foster City. However, Foster City struggled through bond and tax indebtedness as well as unstable city leadership, until 1977 when Foster City achieved stability in city leadership and steady growth in population and property values.
Today, Foster City has approximately 30,000 people and is nearing its projected population of 34,000. The city offers many amenities to its residents. Planned activities for families including things such as Catamaran Park, a Community Bike Ride, and Family Overnight events as well outdoor concerts, and cultural programs. There is also a 9-hole golf course and a world-class windsurfing spot on the San Francisco Bay.
Students attend one of four public schools in San Mateo-Foster City School District for grades K-5 through 8th grade. Three of these schools have won California Distinguished School Award. The middle school, Bowditch Middle School, was also recognized with the US Department of Education Blue Ribbon. There are no high schools east of Highway 101, so high school students attend one of the San Mateo Union High School District schools.
Foster City CA real estate offers homes located in a well-planned community. As the name suggests, there is a master plan as to projected population as well as planned conveniences. Neighborhoods in the planned community are developed with a “grid” system for busy throughways which divert commercial traffic away from the residential areas, thus enhancing the quality of life for the residents.
