Belmont, CA is a small suburb located in San Mateo County, about halfway down the San Francisco Peninsula, and about twenty miles from San Jose. Ohlone Indians originally settled the Bay Area prior to the arrival of the Spaniards in the late 1760s, who controlled the area until the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848. Following this treaty, California had a military government until it became a state in 1850.
The famous San Francisco earthquake of 1906 left Belmont with minimal damage. Instead, the greater impact of the earthquake on Belmont was that refugees from the quake found the area desirable for relocation. The influx of these refugees caused Belmont to abandon its isolationistic attitude and expand its horizons to become a bona fide member of the larger Peninsula community. Additionally, the railroad service and a new tunnel provided a shorter commute for San Franciscans, and made living in Belmont more desirable.
Today, Belmont is a residential community in the middle of the culturally and technologically rich Bay Area. Belmont celebrates its community pride and promotes a proactive use of the town’s assets to keep everyone well informed and connected on issues and activities of interest.
The San Mateo Office of Education has committed to improving the quality of education in all of its schools. As an example, the Carlmont High School which is located in Belmont has been awarded a Distinguished California School recognition.
